What’s Really Making You Sneeze . . .

If you said, “ragweed,” you’re right!

Common ragweed, Ambrosia artemisiifolia is responsible for hay fever. This member of the Asteraceae family is an annual weed, reaching 1-6’ in height.

Removing this invasive plant, before it drops its seed, is a recommended control.

Ragweed blooms at the same time, late summer/early fall, as goldenrod.

If you said, “goldenrod,” you’re wrong!

Unlike ragweed, perennial goldenrod (also in the Asteraceae family) is pollinated by insects. Its heavy pollen is not wind-borne therefore not a cause of hay fever. It you look closely you may see bumblebees, honeybees, butterflies and other pollinators. Since the flowers come late in the growing season they provide a very important food source for honeybees and butterflies.
